Daifuku

大福

Soft, round mochi filled with sweet red bean paste.

About this wagashi

Daifuku means "great luck". It is one of the most familiar wagashi in Japan and is eaten all year. Variations include mame daifuku with salted beans and ichigo daifuku with a whole strawberry inside.

How it is made

Glutinous rice is steamed and pounded into mochi. While still warm, it is stretched thin around a ball of bean paste and sealed quickly before it cools.
